Sarah Jane

At a quaint country crossroad, by a little white church, a mossy monument marks the resting place of a lady named Sarah Jane.  I became acquainted with Miss Sarah when I was a small child.  My school sat across from the graveyard and the busses lined up at the stop sign while loading.  As a first grader, I'd sit on the bus and peer out the window at that engraved stone.  I became so familiar with her name, that I'd sometimes whisper "Hi Sarah Jane" against the cool bus window.

The school has been demolished and trendy condos now occupy the lot, but Sarah Jane hasn't budged.  As I grow older, I'm more aware of how tiny the segment we occupy is compared to the vast scroll of time.  Life can seem so big, and our affairs so large, but from an eternal lens... not so much.  We only get a few days under the sun, then like Sarah Jane, we experience the endless eternity just over the horizon.

I pass Sarah Jane now and again when I take a certain route into town.  Today I jumped out of my car and snapped this photo.  I don't know why.  I guess I'm reorienting my perspective a bit today.  I want to live with an eye more fixed on the eternal than the ephemeral.  Thanks again, Sarah Jane, for keeping it real.
"Seek to be good, but aim not to be great;
A woman's noblest station is retreat;
her fairest virtues fly from public sight;
domestic worth that shuns too strong a light."
 ~George Lyttelton, 1st Baron Lyttleton

  1. Wow, Sarah Jane. I don't remember my classmate's middle name, but she was another Sarah Crouch in fact. She didn't live to see even the age of 18 however. :-( Sad story b/c she wasn't where she was supposed to be when she was in the car accident that took her life. Yep, keeping it real.

    My hubby often talks of wanting to make a looong timeline around our upper walls. With a small blip of a tiny dot to mark any person's life in the scheme of eternity. Perspective.

    As far as the fun for now striped twine... I've seen several options on Amazon. It's 10 cents/foot from Garnish. Or if you have a Michael's or Hobby Lobby, they would have it. Maybe even Walmart?

    Pie: Yes, I leave it in the plate. Which is why I own so many ;-) But it might work to remove it after it freezes too.

    Off to write a post about one of my naughty 4th grade adventures...

    1. I'm going into town later today and I will be hunting for that twine! It's too bad you and your many pies live so far away. Looking forward to your naughty fourth-grade memoirs.

  2. I see she was only 42 when she died. A short life to us; probably common back then.

    1. I know, right? I'd never noticed the inscription at the bottom of the stone before. I can't make it out, so today when I go into town, I plan to stop at that corner and pay Sarah Jane another visit. Thanks for stopping by, Gorges.
